Jeffrey Wilhelm on: "Is School Boring?"

Jeffrey Wilhelm is an associate professor of English Education at Boise State University. Here's what he has to say about school after completing research on boys and literacy.

"The boys were looking for something that was purposeful, that was immediately functional, that engaged them, that they were going to make or do something that was usable, where their competence was actually being challenged and developed..."

"You don't learn by being told what to think... That doesn't lead to learning or expertise or understanding or use in any domain, with any activity."

"School is basically an activity of inactivity. Where you're doing what other people tell you what to do."

In this clip, Wilhelm speaks to inquiry-based learning, which is also is interesting.
